It is not possible to make your vehicle appear newer than it is, you can only transfer a registration for the age of your car or previous to its current registration plate. If you have a car that was made in 1985, you cannot put a registration prefix that came out in 1997. A general rule of thumb is that for prefix based plates (A through to Y) you can go from "A", up to the letter you currently have, so a J registered vehicle can have any number in the A through to J classic prefix ranges.
A vehicle released from September 2001 onwards will have the new format registrations (51, 02, 52 etc). Again you cannot make your vehicle look newer, but these vehicles can have an old classic prefix plate as well as the new ones up to the registration of the vehicle. A 52 registered vehicle can have A through to Y on the classic prefix range and 51, 02 and 52 from the new range.
